How Stress May Affect Your Smile
Scientists are learning more and more about the correlation between stress, anxiety, and our health. The latest findings show that our oral health is adversely affected by stress and anxiety. At Helfner Dental Associates, we believe that the entire body is part of good health. If you've noticed some problems with your oral health, such as the following, call us for an appointment.
Bruxism
Also called teeth grinding or jaw clenching, bruxism is a common precursor to oral health issues. Bruxism can result in:
- Cracked teeth
- Facial soreness
- Headaches
- Jaw pain, which often manifests as TMJ
- Worn teeth
You may be experiencing these without knowing it, but if you wake up with any of these symptoms, you may have bruxism.
Gum Disease or Inflamed Gums
If you're always stressed, your immune system may be weakened, so you'll be unable to fight infection. This includes infection in your gums, so you'll be at risk of developing periodontal disease and may notice the following:
- Bleeding or swollen gums
- Receding gums
- Loosened or lost teeth
These symptoms can occur as a result of stress, which increases the body's inflammatory response. If you already have inflamed gums, stress can worsen the response.
Dry Mouth
Dry mouth is one symptom of stress and anxiety and can be caused by certain medications or activities, such as mouth breathing. Saliva is essential for eliminating bacteria, maintaining the proper pH of the mouth, and removing residual food particles. Without saliva, your risk of developing cavities and gum disease increases.
How to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
It's easy to get exhausted and stressed and think that you'll skip brushing and flossing just this once. However, that "just once" approach can often lead to a nightly habit and poor oral health.
To avoid that misstep, be sure to follow these steps:
- Eat a balanced diet
- Avoid sugary foods and snacks
- Brush at least twice daily, floss at least once daily
- Avoid the "just once" trap
- Maintain good hydration
- Use a nightguard if you have bruxism
- Schedule regular dental exams and cleanings
If you notice any of the above symptoms, visit your dentist without delay. We can help you save your beautiful smile and provide additional ways to eliminate the effects of stress on your oral health!
