Invisalign® in Commack and Dix Hills
Are you unhappy with your smile? Crooked or misaligned teeth can cause you to smile less and make you self-conscious, and metal braces may not appeal to you for several reasons. However, there's a solution. The Invisalign® system of clear aligner trays can provide you with the beautiful straight teeth you've dreamed of without the discomfort and lack of appeal of traditional metal braces.
What is Invisalign?
The Invisalign system of orthodontics uses clear aligner trays, similar to the whitening trays dentists use, to gently guide your teeth into proper alignment. Minimal pain is involved, and most patients will only feel a slight sensation of pressure when the new trays are installed.
When you go to your dentist, they'll make an impression of your teeth and use it to fabricate your aligner trays. The computer will calculate the projected changes to your teeth, and you'll receive new aligner trays approximately every two weeks thereafter until your Invisalign treatment has been completed. The trays are virtually invisible, so no one will know you're wearing them unless you tell them.
Why Are the Aligner Trays Effective?
The trays fit very snugly and use gentle pressure to guide your teeth into proper alignment. Since the process is gradual, the trays aren't painful, and they don't damage your teeth. They must be worn at least 20 to 22 hours each day, although they can be briefly removed for important events, like a graduation or a wedding.
How Long Does It Take for Invisalign to Work?
Depending on the degree of correction needed, as well as other orthodontic work you may need, the Invisalign system typically takes anywhere between 10 months to 2 years to work, which is similar to the time needed for traditional metal braces. For an adult, the treatment usually takes about one year. However, you may need to wear Invisalign retainers after your treatment has been completed, but your dentist will advise you on this. If you have any questions, please call our office, and we'll be happy to help you.
Are There Benefits to Invisalign?
The primary benefit of Invisalign treatment is its invisibility. Many older teens and adults don't want the discomfort or the unsightly appearance of traditional metal braces, but the clear aligner trays are virtually invisible. The system was developed by a group of Stanford University students who anecdotally wore them during their sales presentation to potential investors. After the presentation, the students removed their aligner trays, and the investors were convinced.
Other benefits include:
- There are no dietary limitations since you remove the trays before eating and drinking.
- Office visits are required only every four to six weeks.
- No unsightly wires or brackets will chafe or cut your mouth.
- You can remove the trays whenever you need to do so.
When you eat or drink, you should remove your trays, then brush and floss well before reinserting them. If you chew gum, you need to remove your trays beforehand to avoid damaging the trays.
Some substances, such as red wine or tobacco, can stain your trays, so remove them beforehand. You may clean them using the manufacturer's cleaning system that’s available in our office, or you can clean them at home with a soft brush and cool water. Avoid hot water or hot drinks since those can warp the trays.
If you have a damaged or lost tray, call our office immediately to get a replacement. And remember, the trays must be worn for 20 to 22 hours daily to be effective.
What is the Invisalign Cost?
Your Invisalign cost will be unique to you and will depend on:
- The degree of correction needed
- Additional work required
- Your Invisalign insurance coverage
Usually, the Invisalign cost is comparable to that of traditional metal braces and the correction time can be similar. However, the comfort level and the appearance make Invisalign the braces of choice for many.
Many insurance plans provide a braces benefit, so we recommend that you contact your insurance provider before your first appointment. That way, you know the provisions and limitations of your coverage for braces. We're adept at insurance billing, and we'll work with you to get the most coverage from your insurance benefits. Call our office if you have any questions or want to schedule an appointment.
Which Is Better, Invisalign vs Braces?
The choice of Invisalign vs braces depends strictly on personal preference as long as you're a good candidate for Invisalign. Most people prefer the comfort and appearance of Invisalign over other types of braces, but Invisalign dentists will recommend the best solution for you.
